A Felted Purse - Suntan Art Center

$110.00

WHEN: SEPT 22 | 10am - 1pm

& SEPT 29 | 11am - 2pm

WHERE: SUNTAN ART CENTER

Transform soft, colorful wool fibers into a one-of-a-kind felted purse using a ball as your resist.

This is a two-day, hands-on experience that invites you to slow down and enjoy the fascinating process of wet felting. Rather than sewing or stitching a purse together, you'll create the entire form by building and felting layers of wool directly over a resist.

DAY ONE — BUILDING THE FORM (SEPT 22)

We'll begin by learning how wool fibers work and how to create a strong, even felt. You'll carefully layer colorful wool and place it over the ball, building your purse one layer at a time.

This part of the process is all about color, texture and patience.

DAY TWO — FELTING & FULLING (SEPT 29)

On the second day, we get our hands—and our wool—very wet.

Through rolling, rubbing, pressing and fulling, you'll encourage the individual wool fibers to interlock and become a strong, durable fabric. As the wool gradually shrinks and firms, the soft layers transform into a beautifully sculptural purse.

Once the felt has reached the right density, the resist is removed and the opening and final shape are refined. You'll finish with a unique handmade purse created entirely from wool.

THE JOY IS IN THE PROCESS

Wet felting is not a process to rush. It requires patience, persistence and a little physical effort, but that's also what makes it so rewarding.

There's something wonderful about watching loose, delicate fibers become a strong, functional piece of art through nothing more than wool, water, movement and your own hands.

No previous felting experience is necessary. Come prepared to experiment, get your hands wet, and enjoy the process of making something truly your own.
